Behind the Scenes

Below is a YouTube link that leads to our behind the scenes footage. The majority of the video takes place in "Franky's Room" because we were able to hang one of our phones with an object that has a suction cup that attaches to glass. We weren't able to gather much footage of behind the scenes in  the "school" location. We were going to have someone film for behind the scenes for the school, however we needed as many extras in the scene to make the scene seem like a more realistic school environment.

The Mask Used for the Film

One of my group members and I decided to make the mask that will be featured in the film. The mask is inspired by this sketch below.

I first purchased the white mask shown below, and I started drawing out the lines that will shape the eyes, mouth, and forehead design. Next I paint those outlined areas black. I did two coats of paint to make sure the color would be solid. Next I paint the rest of the mask red, and applied three coats. After letting the mask dry, it was now time to apply the black shape that is placed at the top of the mask. To make this black hair-like object, which is made by a black fuzzy material, I shape it so that it has a point at the end and then sow it to keep the shape. After sowing, and finalizing the shape, I then get a hot glue gun and attach the hair-like object to the back of the mask. The mask is now complete. Below are before and after photos of the mask that I created.

The mask shown below was made by my group member, and it ended up being the mask we chose to use for the film. He made the mask with paper michet, cardboard (for the eyebrows), and spray paint (black and green).

Song in the Opening

My group decided on the song we will be using in the of the film. The song is entitled "Pretend" by I Fight Dragons.

We asked for permission to use the song by email, and below is proof that we are able to use their song in our film!

Shot List

Our group created a shot list in order to be organized in what type of shots we are going to utilize and what will be in the frame of each shot:
The letters are different locations, and shot abbreviations include: WS (wide shot), CU (close up), MS (medium shot), and OS (over-the-shoulder).

  1. Int. Bedroom. Day
  2. Montage
  3. School

1A. WS. Out of focused bedroom, FRANKIE getting up from bed, entering the frame. He yawns and then the alarm sounds. This really wakes him up as a song plays making him get up. He exits the frame. Focused. PUSH INTO a computer with YouTube as the website. As we get nearer, the song gets louder. As the beat drops, we cut to the montage.

1B. WS. YouTube Page
2B. CU. Search Bar
3B. MS/BOOM DOWN. Related Videos
4B. MS. YouTube Video with Title. Background out of focused.

1C. CU. YouTube Video. Pull back to reveal video on smartphone and people walking. Follow people to fight.
2C. MS. FRANKIE entering frame. EDDIE punches him to the ground
3C. MS/Low Angle. EDDIE and EMMA
4C. MS/High Angle. FRANKIE
5C. OS. EMMA
6C. OS. EDDIE
7C. CU. EMMA walking away
8C. MS. FRANKIE getting up
9C. CU. Mask is falling down
10C. WS. FRANKIE walking away
11C. CU. Mask on ground, but two feet mysteriously enter the frame

Movie Genre

The genre of the film will be a dramatic comedy. Movies such as The Princess Diaries, The Bucket List, and 50 First Dates have inspired this genre choice. All movies are meant to revolve around a character's life, or several character's lives, in which they experience a change of course that impacts them strongly in both positive and negative ways. The overall film will be a mixture of both serious and comedic scenes to have viewers experience a roller coaster of emotions. We want our viewers to have a good laugh but we also want them to recognize how certain events in life can change a person. Our main character in the film has been exposed to this life of fame that comes with the package of long term consequences. This film will take viewers on a journey of this teenage boy's life as he let's the fame get to him (taking into consideration that he was once a nobody), and loses himself from the clear path he was once on.

Mask Ideas

Here are some mask ideas that have been sketched! This mask will be used as a prop for the opening of the film, and it plays an essential role in the plot concerning the teenager's secret identity as a YouTube star.

What's Our Movie Going to be About?

My group had several meetings with other groups in which we discussed our movie ideas. We presented two ideas: a big brother (AKA the popular guy at school) showing his little brother (who is a well-behaved shy kid) how to escape school OR how a student is a nobody at school, and starts a YouTube channel to escape reality. After discussing both film ideas we leaned more towards the YouTube one. We decided to build upon the story of how he escapes reality through YouTube. This student's YouTube becomes quiet popular at the school he attends, yet nobody at school knows its him because he wears his mask during all his videos. He then starts getting this idea that if he reveals his identity he will become popular and get the girl of his dreams. After much thinking he decides to continue with this plan of revealing himself, and on the day he does, his predictions were correct. Everybody at school loves him, and he got his crush's attention. Throughout this journey of becoming popular, he loses himself as he lets the fame get to him.
During the film opening, we want to capture the character's background of this idea of him being a "nobody" at school, and how he creates YouTube videos. We find that this will be quiet difficult to present in such limited time. However, my group is up for the challenge, and discussion is taking place on how to present our character through the opening.

Possible Style Choice for the Opening

During a group discussion, we explored several styles in which we would like our intro to begin. Our goal is to introduce our main character, and give a background as to who they are. My group wants viewers to feel as if they know this character, and to understand why they behave in a certain way as the film progresses. One of our ideas was that we would present the opening of the film by breaking the fourth wall, having the character speaking directly to the audience, in an engaging manner.

Similar film openings that inspired this idea of breaking the fourth wall are Wolf on Wall Street and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (click on the movie title to go the link for the opening of that movie). Another idea that would be neat is to a combination of both dialogue and breaking the fourth wall cutting back and fourth during the scene. This would allow viewers to be able to see the character interacting with others, and hearing their personal side comments or opinions of the situation. Many people are not used to this type of format of having an actor and/or actress speak directly to the camera, and that's why I think it would be an interesting perspective to pursue.
